The cap rail and coaming top, port side near the stern. Note the curved,
S shaped locking scarfs, with a star shape locking them. The S shape goes
past the center line, locking them fore and aft, and the star shape, which
is routed in with a jig, locks them athwartships. The S shape was also
done with a jig for the router. I have seen this done with a locking shape
which looks kind of like a dog biscuit, which I never liked much, so I
spent a couple of days fooling around with other shapes and came up with
the star, which works well. I thought about doing the star in another
wood, like ebony or something, for contrast, but decided this would be
a bit much, and wanted to keep it understated. The stern cleat is 2 3/4"
90 degree weld els, with caps, welded to an ellipse and the ellipse welded
to the deck. The stern hawsehole in the bulwarks is just aft of this.
This cleat works well here, and I didn't have room in this area for the
bollards which I used elsewhere.
